Sierra Leonean Students in Saudi Arabia Celebrate International Students Day
Riyadh, Wednesday, 6th December, 2023
Sierra Leonean students of Riyadh’s Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU) have joined their colleagues and the university authorities to celebrate the International Students’ Day, an event set aside by the university to allow students from different countries around the world to showcase their countries’ cultures and traditions.
Alpha Umar Jalloh, President of the Sierra Leone Students Union of IMSIU, said this was the first time the authorities of the University gave them the opportunity to showcase the cultures and traditions of their countries.
The PhD student said during the event, they were able to define Sierra Leone as a peaceful, friendly country that is open to trade and investment, endowed with arable fertile land for agricultural investment, and one that is rich in natural mineral resources, including crude oil.

“This is a historical moment for us today, as we have been privileged to celebrate our country in a grand style by portraying our country’s cultural heritage to show the world that Sierra Leone is a good destination for tourists. We also showcased some of our products and images of our agricultural products and minerals, such as coffee, cocoa, cacao, diamonds and gold,” Mr Jalloh emphasized.
He commended the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Saudi Arabia for the tremendous support given to them towards the success of the event.
A total of 32 Sierra Leonean students are currently enrolled at Riyadh’s Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University.

IMSIU, which is a government higher education institution, was originally established from the amalgamation of the Islamic Law College and the Arabic Language College in Riyadh, and was officially established by a royal decree in 1951. The university’s strengths lies in its Islamic foundations and contribution to the wider world.
The university has contributed largely to the country’s leadership since many graduates have held high leading positions in the country. IMSIU offers BA, MA, MSc and PhD degrees in Shari’ah, Religion Fundamentals, Arabic language, social sciences, media and communication, languages and translation, computer and information science, economics and administrative science, medicine, and engineering.
